is one son better than the other? most of us would say that one son is clearly better than the other. after all, the younger son hurt his father by demanding his inheritance early, left his father's house and used his inheritance to live a life of debauchery (many sins).
how does God see it? is one son better than the other? Jesus says that the father yearns for his younger son. "While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.’ But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’"
after the older son complains, the father says "'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’”
Paul in Romans 3:23 says "there is no distinction; all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God." the good news is that we "are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed, through the forbearance of God—to prove his righteousness in the present time, that he might be righteous and justify the one who has faith in Jesus." (romans 3: 24-26).
