patience

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not complain, brothers, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Indeed we call blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of the perseverance of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, because “the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”

But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your “Yes” mean “Yes” and your “No” mean “No,” that you may not incur condemnation.
James 5: 7-12

new tone?

Pope admits 'serious errors' on Chilean bishop accused of cover up

"Scicluna’s most celebrated prosecution involved the late Mexican Father Marcial Maciel Degollado, founder of the Legion of Christ, who was found guilty in 2006 and sentenced to a life of 'prayer and penance'.”

would life sentences of "prayer and penance" be satisfactory justice for those found guilty of war crimes? is sexual exploitation of children, and covering it up, lesser crimes?

those who break the law by committing serious crimes against other persons, especially children, should be charged publicly, tried publicly and, if proven guilty, sentenced publicly in criminal court. the person guilty of child sex abuse is then placed on the public sex offender list.

here's the deal: crimes against minors are a serious matter in this country. when a adult is charged publicly with sexual exploitation of a minor, their employer typically suspends them immediately from their job. they appear before a judge who decides in public court whether or not the person will be granted bail while they await trial. if the offender is found guilty, then he or she is typically sentenced to jail/prison and placed permanently on public state and national sex offender lists.

by contrast, the church does not suspend the priest from his duties. the bishop covers up the crime(s) by reassigning the priest to another parish without informing parishioners of the charge, e.g. Juan Barros, Bernard Law, Philip Wilson, etc. if public pressure is sufficient, then the church may privately sentence the priest to "a life of prayer and penance". higherups who cover up the crimes get protection from inside vatican walls.

despite the pope's change in tone, the church still has a long way to go in recognizing the severity of sexual crimes committed by adults against children, and the church's responsibility to society in dealing with those who commit these crimes, and to their victims.

faith

in a dark world, where evil seems to prevail, faith in God is the answer.

in John 3 11-21 Jesus says:

"Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God."

Jesus God came into a dark world where, even as a baby, He was sought to kill. eventually those who sought to kill Jesus succeeded. He was relentlessly pursued, betrayed, tortured and died on a cross like a criminal. it appeared that evil had prevailed. but, evil didn't prevail. Jesus rose from the dead. He crushed evil.

if only we have faith.
